Borders mean nothing when countries are dependent on each other economically. When markets are global.
In their minds Western leaders the shareholders of multinational companies and their lackeys bureaucrats, politicians, ministers, presidents live in a post-national, post-state world, and they exploit the neanderthal minds of Eastern Europeans in the sense of the Cold War division who still think in nations, countries, states, and pit them against each other trying to profit while they are distracted by their petty squabbles over these meaningless things.
Who cares if Belarus belongs to Russia? Both are already a multi-ethnic states.
Western leaders claim to support Ukraine's sovereignty, then include it in the EU, just to abolish states within the EU, and abolish Ukraine.
