GermanyLife in Japan as a teenagerBernd2021-02-20 13:35:35 · 6yNo. 110327reply
I once made this thread two years ago, so here it is again.

When I was 14 years old, I was given the decision to either stay in Germany or go to Japan for a few years because of my fathers new job.
I didn't have much to lose so I decided to go abroad.

I lived in Niigata (marked on the population density map, first picture). It is a rural province of Japan which is said to produce the best rice in the world.
It is one of the poor provinces of japan, which is experiencing a harsh depopulation during to more jobs and much better wages in the regions around Tokyo and Osaka.
In the 2nd picture, you can see how Japan is divided. The gray provinces are rich, and the greeen ones are rural and rather "poor", it can be compared to modern east and west Germany.
People living in the gray provinces often make fun of those in the green ones, calling the green provinces "裏日本" (ura nihon) which translates to "the hidden side of japan", as nobody really cares about it.
Niigata might be poor compared to Tokyo, but in return crime, polluted air and wage slavery is not a thing there.

In the 3rd picture you can see Niigata's rice fields. In Niigata it doesn't matter where you go - as long as you are not in a city, you will be surrounded by rice fields.
The 4th picture is Mt. Yahiko, a very beautiful place to go hiking to, as there is also an old temple and a traditional village on its top.

I went to school normally and tried my best to somehow not fail the tests, had some friends and all in all life was good but also a lot more inconvenient compared to my life in Germany.

Those who care about the everyday life in rural japan of a gaijin teenager are welcome to ask me anything in this thread.

That being said, I did not take too many pictures as I was not on vacation. Also many of the pictures from my old iPod touch have been lost. Still I tried to gather as many pictures as possible from chat groups and my old Laptop to somehow show Bernd what life looked like in Niigata.

Obviously yes, as the boards of Japan are 99.99% Japanese.

The most popular boards are actually textboards and not imageboards, so something like memes do not exist in the Japanese internet as we know them and the word Miimu wasn't even known there until maybe two or three years ago, the "cool kids" on Twitter and Instagram would start to post Pepe and larp as a foreign meme pro.

Also, these textboards have a massive userbase and therefore a huge impact on society.
Tons of artificial words are created there and many of them will find their way into every day Japanese a few years later. The amount of internet slang in Japanese is incomparable big compared to the English one.

I'll give an example.

Pic related is the explanation how the Chinese character for grass, 草 (kusa), is now widely used for "lol", even by chads and stacies. Some people even say it irl but that's cringe.

笑う means to laugh, and its pronunciation is "warau".
In the early days of the internet, only 笑 (wara) was used as a smiling emoji replacement.
However this was annoying to type, so people just wrote a "w" at the end of a sentence, and the funnier something was, the more W's they would add at the end, pic 2 is comments on a random video.

Now, some people said "wwwwwwww" looks like a grassfield, so the chinese character for grass, plant is now the new "lol".

There are even expressions like 大草原不可避 which roughly translates to "The steppes are inevitable" and basically means ROFL, or LMFAO.

Words like this on fucked up ways are created every month, they come and go, some stay, others don't.

sounds a bit scary, as if the japanese are so out of touch with each other that anonymous web forums shape the whole society, no wonder they're going extinct

What do you think of feminism?
GermanyBernd2021-02-22 18:10:14 · 6yNo. 110612reply
Not as bad as Imageboards claim.
While I do believe that women are inferior to men in a couple of things, they should not be treated any worse because of it.
Feminism was needed in the west until a few decades ago, however modern western feminists do not want to be treated equal, but special.
We have the freedom of speech so they can think and say whatever they want, and if they decide to hate men and therefore don't breed, it is a self-solving problem.

Been learning French for a year, with 6 months pauses. Feels good, now I can read some Wiki articles. The goal was to read French pedo and gay literature. Guess in two years I will be there.
Other than perverted shit, there is no reason to learn the language, I haven't found any real application for that.

>Other than perverted shit, there is no reason to learn the language
true
learned french when I was 17 and I barely used it, until I wanted to read The Thief's Journal, but I only could find it in french, now I'm polishing my french for reading it without stopping every two lines
But (besides a few meme pages) french stuff is boring and kein-tier
although I find it pretty funny sounding, I think that's why I remember almost every French word I've read

>with 6 months pauses. Feels good, now I can read some Wiki articles
great, I was trying to do that with Russian for one year but I can barely read anything
I think I don't focus myself on it

Doesn't it sound like somebody is really upset all the time and complaining in French?

>great, I was trying to do that with Russian for one year but I can barely read anything
No wonder, it's difficult to use Russian correctly even for natives. Mistakes, mistakes everywhere. After school, I've spend like 5 more years to be able to use grammar properly.

at least in spanish people think their pronunciation is funny
stressing the end of each word and having guttural Rs
it's even used in (pretty old) commedies

I suppose I'd had to practice more then

It's supposed to be a game in the spirit of old games like Pharao, Caesar, Zeus (Impressions Games the developers are called). I didn't play any of those, so nostalgia isn't really a pulling factor for me. I just had a look at the the open source implementation of Caesar a few weeks ago.

Just watched the trailer, looks too complicated for me.
Happens to me all the time with games like this, I just build and build for a few hours and then either my economic system breaks down or some NPC enemy runs over my little village and everything ends within the blink of an eye.

Rn I'm playing pic related, it's quite good so far.
NetherlandsBernd2021-02-22 10:58:03 · 6yNo. 110563reply
played pharao a lot, and a bit of zeus, but did not like the artwork there as much.

if the road system works similar to pharao then the town in the pic you showed i highly ineficient (though i prefer to build nice looking cities too).

will not buy it though, im pretty certein it will not keep me playing for very long.

Too late. I decided to post on kohl again instead of here.
See, if here would be people that can produce interesting content, they would have been doing that already. And I've been browsing the nouveau KC for a month.
But this place became very slow, it means it's dying. And a single poster in that case won't change the situation.

So since this pandemic started, I started to learn Russian because I love languages and I didn't know what to do with all my free time.
After one year, I got to a level where I can easily read and understand 95%+ of the text in games as in pic related, but I don't know how to go on.
So far I only learned grammar, some words and played games and read some Manga that use easy language.

So I can read quite okayish, but in understanding spoken language I suck and speaking is still close to impossible.

Can Бернд recommend me anything to do? Any good YouTube channels that don't talk too fast and actually have interesting content? Any series to watch? Easy books to read? I tried watching Anime, but the voice overs give me cancer, and I am still far too bad to read books like Harry Potter.

You were asking for Russian metal recommendations. Have you heard about Branikald? It's Black Metal (some people might be turned off because they might consider the band as politically questionable) so not sure if that's your kind of beer.
Of course, Kaldrad, the guy behind that band died in a traffic accident (hit by car). Very Russian.

Post pictures of Turkish bread, I'm truly curious.

In Germany I have noticed that different Döner shops use different styles of bread. Most is meh, but one town uses really good bread. I have recently discovered that it is a Türkish-style bread, but supplied by a German bakery. (pic rel) I have not been able to obtain this bread in other towns.

Where I live now, there is even a Türkish bakery, but the bread there doesn't look very appealing to me. To be honest, neither does the bread from German bakers in this town. I suffer in a town without good bread ;_;
