I want to learn all the countries and territories (and maybe all island) of the world.
The UN nations were pretty easy but these tiny little territories suck. How can I better remember which is which?

If you are bored you can do this quiz. It's pretty fun. Just make sure to do it on hard. It's too easy otherwise.

I don't know the answer, but anyhow, I salute you.
GermanyBernd2021-08-17 17:54:50 · 5yNo. 120357reply
Maybe learn about their history and politics? This might help you make connections beyond just names and shapes on a map.

Let's take the Faroe Islands as an example. I know that Stóra Dímun is inhabited by only two families who usually need to take a helicopter to get on and off their island. I know that Lítla Dímun is uninhabited. I know that the very southern typ of the southernmost island Suðuroy was once inhabited by Frisians, etc etc etc...

These little facts make these places come alive and be memorable in my mind.

I have also travelled there a little bit and know about some roads and ferries, which creates further connections.

What is your opinion on Slavoj Žižek?
3 messages omitted.
SloveniaBernd2021-08-16 00:51:06 · 5yNo. 120121reply
Eh, Slavoj Žižek had his phase of doing that: he did some quite serious and hermetic works in the 90s, drawing on Hegel and Lacan mostly. But he soon realised his real strength is in popular philosophy – basically applying the philosophical theory onto the familiar pop culture, to bring it close to people.
Is he then the Carl Sagan of philosophy? Perhaps...
Now that he's getting old he's increasingly reliant on recycled witticisms, but his thought proves to be perennial; lindy, dare I say?
RussiaBernd2021-08-16 02:39:55 · 5yNo. 120129reply
Hes prolly the only modern philosopher who moves it somewhat forward.
GermanyBernd2021-08-16 15:30:24 · 5yNo. 120195reply
He is still publishing like crazy. I think he is very based. A philosopher just sitting in his ivory tower doesn't really do much for society and Zizek isn't just an airbag, either. He has substance, when he talks. Maybe he isn't perfect, but he is much better than 99% of people who get media attention.
SloveniaBernd2021-08-17 15:04:01 · 5yNo. 120341reply
Another thing I gotta give him major props for:
as you already mentioned >>120195 he's an extremely prolific writer; and he always manages to tie stuff to current events. And he's quick. He's always done while it's still relevant. He has 2 books on pandemic out now. And he writes opinion pieces on almost any serious happening. For example his opinion on Taliban takeover: https://www.rt.com/op-ed/532207-zizek-taliban-retake-afghanistan-reason/

Commonwealth travel is quite easy, but these two are special cases. I originally arrived to the NZ on a 90 day visitor travel visa, then applied for my working holiday. It's been extended twice for free, totalling my stay to nearly three tiresome years.

And I just visited the cbd supermarket. Every road was busier than normal, and included a few cyclists. I queued up in line and started talking to the poor stock boy who'd been tasked to guard the door. His unnerved disposition added to the general instability and worried shoppers buying goods they had no need. I walked down the drink aisle to snatch up an energy drink and a bottle of juice, and there were two men frantically talking about buying rubbish they certainly didn't need. My favourite part was as I exited the self service payout, a crowd burst through the stock boy who had evidently given up against the dammed up crowd of uneasy people. It was a good laugh and the only smiling people except me, were a few islanders.
Additional information: texted my workhorse Maori (health and safety) supervisor asking if there was any work. He didn't know. I jabbed that health and safety should know. He told me to fuck off, then said I should have worked on Monday. Then I said he does know, and finally he said we're a nonessential service. My crew boss phoned me asking if I'd do a seven day shift next week and I hesitantly accepted because I didn't need another three days off.

I’ve been going to the beach every weekend to slowly build my social muscles.
Yesterday I had a nice cordial but short conversation with a couple of people my age.
As always, I usually only converse with bydlo, because they are the most outspoken of all social groups, but by doing so I learn how to talk to people and build confidence.

I did the same the week prior, and while I cringe at how I was after the fact, I know it was beneficial for me becoming more social.

Based.
Meditation helps against cringe attacks, btw.

Based.
There are some cultural differences, and of course situational differences, about how to strike up a conversation. In many countries it is acceptable to make a remark about the weather. "Shitty weather, eh?" and then you consider the response. It is not really about the weather. It is about finding out if the other person wants to talk to you. If they just say "Hmhm." and look away, they aren't interested. If they strike up a conversation, you're in.
