>Germany Wants to Radically Reorganize the Railway System
One of our recurring topics is the problems in the work of the German railway concern Deutsche Bahn and the constant delays of trains. And now the Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure of Germany Volker Wissing (pictured) has called for radical reforms of the railways. On September 3, he made a statement to journalists that "should instill hope in the hearts of many exhausted passengers," writes the online portal Tagesschau. According to Wissing, the railways should be "optimally equipped" by 2027.
The minister named the goals of the large-scale reorganization. Firstly, this is an improvement in punctuality - it must meet international standards. It is also necessary to improve the operation of long-distance trains, and introduce standardization in their procurement. It is necessary to dismantle duplicate structures in the management of the DB concern - there should be fewer managers and more workers. It is necessary to re-examine investments not related to the renewal of infrastructure. Finally, the pace of track repairs must be increased and the digitalization of railways must be improved. At the same time, unprofitable routes must not be cancelled for the sake of savings, the minister emphasized.
Wissing demanded that DB present a strict reorganization plan as soon as possible, promising that its implementation will be checked every three months. Deutsche Bahn CEO Richard Lutz must report on this personally. However, critics of the ministerial initiative doubt its implementation. It is not very clear how such well-formulated and attractive goals will be achieved, since the minister did not propose any specific measures.
