I didn’t just grab random stuff either—I picked up real groceries. Things I’d normally buy for my own household.
I packed everything up, dropped it off, and honestly felt like I’d done something decent.
Later on, I got a thank-you message… which I appreciated. But right after that came a list of what they would’ve preferred instead—different brands, different products, different stores, even suggestions for next time.
And I won’t lie, that part kind of hit me in a way I didn’t expect.
Not because people can’t have preferences—they absolutely can. It was just the timing. The groceries had barely been dropped off before the focus shifted from gratitude to critique.
It made me sit there thinking about the money, the effort, the time spent shopping… and somehow the main takeaway became what I should’ve done differently.
And it kind of made something click for me:
A lot of people don’t really notice the effort anymore. They notice what’s missing. What could’ve been better. What wasn’t perfect.

Vranyo: Questions We Need to Ask To Understand Russian State MediaDo the Russian people, restricted from the global internet, really trust state media? This is a question we may be able to answer with a proper understanding of the Russian concept of vranyo.The Russian Federation initiated its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. By early March, the Russian people had become cut off from the global internet. This was just one part of Vladimir Putin’s effort to return Russia to the days of the USSR, when the only news outlets available were The Truth (Pravda) and The News (Izvestia). Russians over 50 will recall the joke that of these two choices there was no news in The Truth and no truth in The News. Even at the height of Soviet power, the people could still think for themselves. So, what do Russians believe today?The New Soviet Vrun
Much changed over the next century. In Dostoyevsky’s time, vranyo was an object of leisure and improvisation. By the time of Stalin’s death, it had become inescapable. The journalist Hedrick Smith, who travelled around Russia in the 1970s, described vranyo as existing in a system that required participation in “the political rites and rituals of Communist society.” Just as the Russian Orthodox Church placed more emphasis on ceremony than theology, the Communist Party placed “more stress on ritual than belief.” These rituals ranged from obligatory speeches at the Bolshoi Ballet School praising the party’s wise patronage to mandatory 15-minute political sessions at factories. Few people actually listened to these speeches and even the lecturers did not really believe what they were saying. One factory worker admitted that speakers often did little more than read propaganda articles straight from the papers.
This system created “radish communists”— red on the outside but white on the inside. It also turned vranyo into a chore. Vruni could not create their own vranyo but were made to repeat state-sanctioned lies. Foremen had to drag workers to the political meetings by their collars, and an eyewitness to the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 explained that the Hungarians had become “fed up with telling lies.”The New Vranyo: Injections of Truth
Soviet vranyo also became, in Hingley’s words, diluted with injections of truth. The spokesmen who claimed that millions of Soviet workers drove to vacation spots on the Black sea “in their own cars,” were now willing to admit that “there are some workers who don’t yet have cars of their own.” These “frank admissions” of various defects served to add reliability to the performance. But if vranyo was not meant to be believed, why did reliability matter? The answer lies in the Russian saying “Vri, vri, da, no ne zaviraisya” — meaning, “I will tolerate your lies until they become so ridiculous that I feel like an idiot for playing along.” Vranyo is meant to create an appealing fictional world, and the audience will not want to step into that world if it makes them feel stupid. in the contemporary context of Ukraine, once it was clear that the war was not going as well as the state claimed, Russian MP Andrei Kartapolov warned on state television that the Defense Ministry needed to “stop lying,” because “our people are not stupid.”Putin as a Vrun
Authoritarian societies tend to imitate the practices of the head honcho. Nikita Khrushchev was a well-known vrun. His very open “secret speech” and promises to surpass America’s agricultural production through a miraculous corn campaign all reeked of vranyo. Putin is a practiced vrun as well. Elena Gorkhova recalls a news article in which Putin was photographed walking out of the Black Sea with two nearly intact ancient amphorae. It would have been impossible for him to find such treasures. Having grown up in the USSR, Gorkhova immediately recognised the vranyo: “Putin was lying to us, we knew he was lying, he knew we knew he was lying, but he kept lying anyways, and we pretended to believe him.”Questions for Modern Russia
Gorkhova suspects that those born after perestroika (restructuring) have lost the ability to detect vranyo. 90s kids were never forced to march in an October Revolution Day parade, and millennials did not grow up with only two newspapers. But how different is today’s Russia from the USSR? Though there are now more than two different news sources, few deviate from the party line and vranyo is everywhere.
To understand the relationship between the Kremlin and the Russian people, there are questions we must ask: do state pundits really believe what they are saying? Or are they engaging in lozh? Has the USSR created a population capable of recognising state lies? To what extent has modernity nullified that capability? Finally, is Russia returning to a vranyo state?
If vranyo is born from shame and a bleak reality, as Dostoyevsky suggests, then the war in Ukraine provides the perfect setting.
The embarrassing performance of the once-vaunted Russian military has become apparent to many inside Russia. The atrocities committed by the Kremlin’s forces have likewise become hard to hide. The phone calls of many Russian soldiers reveal a deep sense of guilt among servicemen, one that has been shared with their families. Given that the truth is so bleak, the temptation to accept a new reality created by state vranyo must be considerable. The world created by Putin’s media machine is blindingly bright. Television is dominated by displays of packed venues full of hands grasping Russian flags and smiling faces chanting, “Russ-i-a! Russ-i-a!” If you were living in Putin’s Russia and a loved one was off fighting in Ukraine, which reality would you want to live in?

PARENTS SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR HOMESCHOOLING THEIR KIDS.
Yes, really.
A couple in Brazil has been sentenced to 50 days in prison after homeschooling their two daughters.
Audato and Ieda Denardi were convicted of “intellectual neglect” after a judge ruled their home education did not include enough state-approved content on “gender and sex education” and “tolerance and diversity.”
But it gets even crazier.
The judge also reportedly cited the girls’ music taste.
Because the daughters did not like “trap” or “sertanejo” music, the court concluded their parents failed to properly educate them in cultural diversity.
Meanwhile, both girls are accomplished pianists and speak multiple languages.
The conviction came even though the prosecutor recommended acquittal after reviewing the girls’ social and academic development.
An independent educational psychologist also found no sign of neglect.
Their mother, Ieda, said:
“As a mother, I cannot conceive a more dictatorial state than the one that wants me in jail because I chose to exercise my right to direct the education and upbringing of my daughters.”
ADF International is supporting the family’s appeal, and the prison sentence is suspended while the case moves forward.
This should alarm every parent.

In my homeland of Finland, our folklore contains stories about something called metsänpeitto ("the forest's cover" or "forest enchantment"). If you go walking in a forest that is normally familiar to you, you may suddenly feel a strange sensation, after which you become completely lost.
People who claim to have experienced it describe it as if their internal compass has stopped working entirely. The forest feels somehow "wrong" or turned inside out. The birds stop singing, the wind no longer blows, and the entire forest becomes eerily silent. Nothing looks familiar anymore.
There are also stories in which search parties have walked only a few meters away from a lost person without noticing them at all. It is almost as if the person had slipped into another dimension.
According to folklore, the condition eventually passes if you simply wait. There are also traditional spells and rituals that are said to help a person escape from the forest's enchantment.
They are fascinating stories.

Even the fertilizer claim collapses under its own documents. The pool was refilled with ordinary D.C. municipal water, which already contains phosphate, a nutrient that feeds algae blooms with zero help from anyone. A dodgeball game in gym class has turned into a criminal case in Yavapai County, Arizona.
Abel Schipper, 13, is facing a misdemeanor assault charge stemming from an eighth grade physical education class at Mayer High School in December 2025. During a warm-up for a dodgeball game, Schipper and two friends threw foam balls at a female classmate, his ex-girlfriend, as she walked out of the bathroom.
By Schipper's own account, he hit her with a ball, one of his friends missed, and another connected as well. He told investigators he did not think a foam dodgeball would cause real harm, describing the balls as small and compressible.
Two days after the incident, a social worker with Banner Health contacted the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, reporting that three boys had "relentlessly assaulted" the girl with dodgeballs. The girl was taken to the emergency room, where photos taken by her mother showed two softball-sized blue and purple bruises on her rib cage and abdomen.
Deputies interviewed the three boys at school. Months later, in March, Schipper's mother received a letter from the Yavapai County Juvenile Justice Center informing her that her son had been charged with misdemeanor assault. She said the school never disciplined him over the incident and that she was unaware a deputy had even spoken to him until the letter arrived.
Schipper's mother has publicly pushed back on the charge, arguing that dodgeball is a game played by children across the country and that treating it as a criminal matter goes too far. She also said the two teens were not on bad terms before or after the incident, adding that the girl continued texting her son afterward asking for rides home.
Schipper is due back in court this week to continue fighting the charge.
Ukrainian drones wipe out elite US brigade in drills.
Ukrainian drone operators gave a U.S. armored brigade a serious wake-up call during a major NATO training exercise in Germany earlier this year.
During Combined Resolve, Ukrainian drone teams reportedly located and scored simulated kills against American armored vehicles so quickly that exercise controllers had to “respawn” destroyed vehicles, putting them back into the fight so the training could continue. The exercise took place in April and May and was designed in part to expose NATO forces to the type of drone-heavy battlefield Ukraine has experienced against Russia.
The drones weren't actually destroying American vehicles. Exercise observers determined when a drone had successfully reached a position where it could realistically have attacked a vehicle. But the speed at which Ukrainian operators found and targeted U.S. forces demonstrated just how vulnerable traditional armored formations can be when operating against experienced drone units.
What may be more important is what happened next.
Over the two-week exercise, American troops began adapting. Units improved their camouflage, dispersed their vehicles instead of concentrating them, and made greater use of electronic warfare to interfere with Ukrainian drones. Ukrainian operators even switched sides during portions of the exercise to help American forces improve their own offensive drone tactics. This is one of the biggest lessons coming out of Ukraine: the battlefield has changed faster than many militaries expected.
A relatively inexpensive FPV drone can potentially locate or destroy equipment worth millions of dollars. Tanks and armored vehicles aren't obsolete, but the days of assuming armor can operate without constant protection from drones, electronic warfare and enemy surveillance are disappearing.
NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe Gen. Alexus Grynkewich reportedly described the value of training against experienced Ukrainian operators simply: “You can’t get training like this in the United States.”

By the late 4th century, during the period surrounding the Council of Laodicea and the regional synods that followed, Enoch was branded apocrypha, a Greek word that literally means hidden away, and it was pulled from Western reading lists and scriptural canons.
Centuries later, the Protestant Reformation inherited this truncated Roman framework, leaving modern Western believers with a 66-book Bible that lacked the eschatological blueprint known to the apostles. But, while Roman authorities were burning manuscripts and enforcing the Latin Vulgate across Europe, an isolated ancient Christian kingdom in the Horn of Africa did not go along with it. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, one of the oldest continuous Christian communities on Earth, kept the entire Enochic corpus alive in their liturgical language of Ge'ez. They preserved an 81-book scriptural canon that held on to something Western councils were unwilling to admit, that the Book of Enoch mattered for understanding the end times. For over a millennium, Western scholars dismissed the Ethiopian text of 1 Enoch as a late medieval forgery, a corrupted compilation written by confused monks long after the time of Jesus. That claim fell apart in the spring of 1947. Bedouin shepherds in the Judean wilderness stumbled into Cave 4 at Qumran, near the shores of the Dead Sea, and out of the dust came fragments of 11 ancient Aramaic manuscripts of the Book of Enoch.

Drill sergeants use more than physical punishment to correct recruits. They also use verbal and psychological pressure to break down pride and build discipline. Nicknames are one of the most common tools, often based on a soldier’s real name, appearance, or mistakes. A private named Foxworth might become “Foxworthless,” and others can be labeled “Biscuits and Gravy,” “Casper,” or “Doc Hollywood,” depending on how they look or act.
Some punishments are designed to embarrass as much as they are to correct. Recruits have been forced to apologize to a porta‑potty, recite rhymes about their own failures, or sing songs as a unit when one person messes up. In one case, a soldier caught listening to music on an iPod was called “Private iPod” for weeks and had to respond to commands like “play” and “skip” with song lyrics.
These methods can feel degrading, humiliating, or even absurd, but they serve a purpose. They teach recruits to perform under stress, follow orders without hesitation, and accept correction without complaint. Many soldiers later say the experience made them tougher, more focused, and better prepared for the demands of real service. Also of topic but The U.S. Army uses an elaborate fictional setting known as the “Decisive Action Training Environment,” with invented countries such as Atropia, Donovia, Ariana, Gorgas, and Limaria.
They have fictional governments, militaries, ethnic and religious groups, economies, alliances, territorial disputes, and years of invented history.
The idea is to give soldiers realistic geopolitical problems without simply declaring a real country the enemy.
Atropia, for example, has appeared repeatedly in Army exercises, with scenarios involving neighboring states, insurgencies, border disputes, civilians, information operations, and humanitarian crises. The fictional geography is deliberately modeled on recognizable parts of the real world so units can practice making decisions in complicated environments.
There is a long precedent for this. Militaries have used imaginary states and hypothetical enemies in war games for well over a century. What makes the modern Army version unusual is the sheer amount of worldbuilding: it is essentially a continuously developed fictional geopolitical universe built for military training.

A Tulsa Woman went to court over her garden and three days later the city showed up with mowers and cut down all 100 plants before the judge ruled anything.

Morrison believed she was following the rule exactly.
When the city cited her, she took it to court instead of backing down and the judge postponed the case to a later date.
Three days later, she came home to find city workers had already dug up and removed her entire garden, without her permission and without waiting for the court’s decision.
When her case finally did go to court, the judge dismissed the citation against her entirely.
By then, the garden was already gone.

Long before he became one of England's most celebrated geologists, William Buckland was a clever, restless young man at Oxford.
In the early years of the 1800s, still a student, Buckland grew curious about a substance British farmers were only starting to take seriously.
Guano, the droppings of seabirds and bats, was prized as a startlingly effective fertiliser.
Rather than write a dry paper, Buckland decided to prove the point where everyone could see it.
Late one night he carried buckets of the stuff onto the great lawn of Christ Church, known to students as Tom Quad, and spread it in careful strokes.
He was not fertilising the grass at random.
He was spelling a word, letter by letter, across the most visible ground in the whole college.
By morning the lawn looked untouched, and the groundskeepers went on mowing it as always.
But as spring warmed the ground, a pattern nobody could scrub away rose out of the turf.
There, in blades growing thicker and greener than everything around them, was the word GUANO.
The college mowed it down again and again, and every time it grew back, all season long, like a joke the lawn refused to drop.
Buckland went on to a distinguished career in fossils and rock strata, but this first experiment had already proven exactly how powerful guano could be.

Slaughterhouses pay up to $750 a wild horse, the investigation found.
The Bureau of Land Management is nominally in charge of protecting the 73,000 or so wild horses who roam America's public lands in the West. Under Trump, the Bureau is sending our wild horses to the slaughterhouse.

A Proposal to Recognize June 13 as The Desolation of Smaug.
June 13, 2026, humanity crossed a completely absurd threshold. For the first time in history, a single individual possesses trillions in wealth.
Many will celebrate this achievement. Some will view it as evidence of innovation, entrepreneurship, or the rewards of exceptional success. Others will point out that such wealth is largely theoretical, tied up in assets rather than cash.
Those arguments miss the point.
The concern is that we have entered a world where the accumulation of resources by a single individual can rival the economic power of entire nations - while the majority of people's future is bleak.
This is a story about the system.
When Tolkien wrote The Hobbit, Smaug was not merely a dragon. He was the embodiment of hoarding. A mountain of wealth sat beneath him, defended obsessively, and inaccessible to those who needed it.
The Desolation of Smaug was everything around the dragon.
A society should be judged by the well-being of its people. When wealth accumulates beyond any conceivable human need, and so many people struggle, something has gone wrong.
That is why I propose that June 13 be remembered as The Desolation of Smaug.
Not as a day of anger or envy. A day of reflection. A reminder that economies exist to serve people.
Most importantly, let it be a hopeful day. Because Tolkien's story does not end with Smaug. It ends with the treasure returning to the world.
The lesson of the story is not that wealth is evil. The lesson is that wealth achieves its highest purpose when it flows through society rather than remaining trapped beneath a dragon's belly.

It appears the supply and logistical issues affecting the US Navy aren’t just restricted to the Middle East. Sailors aboard the USS George Washington, which was deployed in the South China Sea and is now en route to the Middle East to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln of its nearly year-long deployment, have sent photos of their meals to military researcher and author Seth Harp, and boy do they not look appetizing.
“It sucks that they make you wage foreign wars for Israel when you join the US Navy but at least our $1.5 trillion defense budget provides for delicious and nutritious chow aboard warships like the USS George Washington” wrote a sarcastic Seth Harp, who famously exposed a major drug and sex trafficking operation by special forces units at Fort Bragg.
Part of the logistical issues appear to stem from the relocation of the Navy’s main operational hub from Bahrain to island of Diego Garcia following Iranian missile strikes.
Diego Garcia is a tiny remote coral atoll 1,800 km away from the nearest mainland and about 4,000 km away from the Iranian coast.

The root cause of Gulf War syndrome was most likely the result of a combination of chemical toxins, but recent research has helped narrow down the candidates even further. For years, many veterans and researchers suspected depleted uranium from armor-piercing munitions and tank plating was the main culprit, but a 2020 study from the University of Portsmouth examining uranium levels in patients diagnosed with Gulf War syndrome found that none had been significantly exposed to it.
The mystery appears to have been solved after a 2022 assessment funded by the U.S. government studied more than one thousand Gulf War veterans and concluded that low-level sarin poisoning was the principal cause. The results showed that those with a weaker version of the PON1 gene, which plays an integral role in breaking down toxic chemicals in the body, were about nine times more likely to be diagnosed with Gulf War syndrome. This genetic susceptibility explains why some service members fell ill while others in the same unit remained healthy despite similar exposures.
While the authors of the 2022 study claim to have solved the puzzle, further evaluations will be needed to fully confirm their findings. Even so, this represents a watershed moment for those whose lives have been affected by this debilitating condition. Treatments based on this research are now being developed and could become available in the coming years, offering hope that veterans suffering from Gulf War syndrome may eventually recover some sense of normalcy stolen from them by one of the most dangerous nerve agents of the modern era.
