Why do your hands hurt? Also: get a Sensel Morph to play with smaller movements and less force.

I improvise music during my day off. This was my third practice of the day and didn't come out too well.

You should probably play some songs / pieces instead of just improvising.

I agree. I've been meaning to improve my theory, and rekindle the ability to read notation, but working six days a week is a bit challenging to accomplish anything.

Just remember: an octave goes from frequency X to frequency 2*X, there are 12 semitones per octave, 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12 are a major scale and 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11 are a minor scale. Traditional notation is garbage because it looks as if the semitones in c major / a minor were more important than those in between, which they are not. That's pretty much all one needs to know to avoid the pitfalls of music theory.

Nothing, but there is no way your tip will improve his playing.
It's like explaining a kid the difference between red and blue (it already knows that) and then expecting it to paint better.

Nice. And I wasn't giving advice on playing but on theory. You're probably a music teacher who wants to keep his students away from such simple information to seem smarter than you are while babbling about the circle of fifths... Aside from that I admit that I am not a great player on any instrument but that does not invalidate my points on theory.

I sometimes practice various scales, but my favourite is just to mash out random thoughts. If I had a guitar, I could create better melodies.

Well, I think learning scales on a piano is unnecessarily difficult because you have to learn so many fingerings while the instrument hides the fact that the underlying structure stays the same within each mode. With a guitar (ideally tuned in perfect fourths) you could learn in a straightforward and logical manner. Why don't you have one yet? You could also get that Sensel Morph of course and create your own isomorphic keyboard layout...

As to learning hand positions, there's something enjoyable about learning new ergonomic feats with medium sized hands. Such cases.
