What should I do with my money
Bernd 2024-05-03 15:35:03 ⋅ 2w No. 309062I have been a wageslave for ~10 years now and I've accumulated over 200k€ in that time.
I have no idea what to do with it. I already own a car. I don't really travel and don't think I would enjoy travelling alone to other countries that much.
Only think I can think about is buying a house. But houses start at 300k and in this case it would be in some village in the area which would mean that I have to spend way more time commuting to work.
I fear that I will unexpectedly die of undetected cancer any minute and then it will just be lost.

the lower number is the amount of money in ETFs.
The only upside of living in my own house would be that I don't have to deal with neighbors and the large amount of space. I don't get that with apartments. I think it would be best to wait 10+ years until buying real estate in hopes that boomers start dying and we get free houses against.

I don't see any benefit in buying a flat.
If it turns out that you have shitty neighbors you can't just move away. You can't easily switch jobs anymore because you are forced to live in one location. Unless you start to rent it to someone. And then you have to hope that you don't get shitty renters.
You can't do anything to the house unless all owners agree to do stuff. At the other end other owners can force you to pay for things in the house that you wouldn't want to do in the first place.
Also flats are somewhat expensive compared to small houses.

Also I realized that I'm not comfortable with uncontrolled spending just to get rid of it. The most valid option would be to keep on saving and try to retire early. Also I need to find an organization that I would be comfortable donating all of it in case something happens to me that makes it impossible for me to spend it myself.

In one of the older talks of jordon peterson before he jumped the shark he talks that a lot of his patients had family issues and it is important for mental health to make peace with your family. In my opinion this also involved cutting off family members that behave toxic towards you. Otherwise they will continuously create mental stress in you which keeps you from making other positive changes in your life. Most Bernds are created by shitty parents.

I work on ans Desktop Application in the automotive industry in C#/C++.
You probably will have heard this already but the prime advice for younglings is to switch jobs every 2-3 years a couple of times for a better paid one. This can give you up to 30% more pay which you would never get if you stayed in the same company. Every time try to switch to a bigger company because they pay better
it gets more soul draining though because you will have to deal with more legacy code and bureaucracy
. Don't be that guy that stays 20 years at his first job with raises that only compensate inflation every year.
Endgame could be to go to ans OEM with comfy IG-Metall tarif and 35h. But then you most likely barely code anything anymore and only deal with bureaucracy all day. I am one step before that but I like it at my current job, so I probably won't go to ans Daimler/BMW/VW.
